The Scottish Government is looking at new legislation to prevent unlawful letting agents charging tenants premiums for administration such as reference checking, credit checks ,lease agreements and inventory fees. It has been reported that this practice which has been going on for sometime which has numerous cases of tenants be ripped of by unlawful letting agents charging above the rent and deposit. A consultation was introduced this year to tackle these unfair premiums which has been welcomed by Shelter Scotland. The Housing Minister Mr Kenneth Brown has already indicated that legal provisions are to come into power this year.

It has been a very interesting year for letting agents and private landlords in Scotland as it was only several months ago new legislation was also introduced to safe guard tenants deposits which are now to be passed over and held by special approved tenant deposit schemes such as the Letting Protection Service Scotland and MyDeposits.
